Reading
In addition to our daily phonics lessons in EYFS and KS1, here at Oak Tree we also teach daily reading lessons. The focus of these lessons are different depending on the children's age and ability:
EYFS - Daily book talk helps children to listen to reading of a quality text, talk about what they have heard and ask and answer questions.
KS1 ( Year 1 and 2 ) - Daily lessons consist of children reading ability matched books in small groups. Each group is supported by an adult to ensure every child is heard daily. Children are encouraged to apply their phonics and develop fluency through regular practice and repetition.
KS2 ( Year 3,4,5,6) - Daily lessons are planned using 'Destination Reader'. This approach focuses on teaching children key reading skills whilst reading and asking questions in pairs and small groups. Children build on their fluency and development of key skills to support their understanding and comprehension of the text.
The reading skills taught are;
In Year 5 and 6 the reading skills are combined and the intention is the children are able to use these confidently in order to analyse, understand and enjoy the texts they are reading. Becoming confident and fluent readers.
Love of Reading
At Oak Tree we value reading and want our children to enjoy and celebrate their reading together. We do this by;
- Creating opportunities for children to discuss what they have read.
- Creating reading spaces throughout the school.
- Celebrating books through events such as World Book Day and author visits.
- Supporting families to enjoy reading together.
