Computing at Oak Tree Primary School

At Oak Tree Primary School, we teach computing to help children understand and use technology safely and confidently in a rapidly changing digital world.

Our computing lessons follow the Teach Computing curriculum, developed by the National Centre for Computing Education and supported by the Department for Education. This ensures that children develop their knowledge and skills step by step from Early Years through to Year 6.

Children learn about:

  • how computers and technology work
  • programming and coding
  • creating digital media
  • using technology to solve problems
  • staying safe online

Lessons combine learning about important computing concepts with practical activities where children use technology to create, explore and problem-solve.

Online safety is an important part of our computing curriculum. Children learn how to use the internet responsibly, how to protect their personal information and what to do if something online makes them feel uncomfortable.

Throughout the year pupils also take part in events such as Safer Internet Day and Hour of Code, helping them to build confidence and curiosity when using technology.

By the time children leave Oak Tree Primary School, they are confident and responsible users of technology who understand how the digital world works.

Safer Internet Day – Learning to Use AI Safely

At Oak Tree Primary School, as part of Safer Internet Day, pupils across the school spent time learning about Artificial Intelligence (AI) and how it is increasingly part of everyday life. In lessons, children explored what AI is, what it can be used for, and when it should not be used. They then worked independently or in pairs to create AI Safety Posters, explaining these ideas clearly to others. One winning poster from each year group will be shared on the school website to celebrate the thoughtful and responsible work produced by our pupils.

Alongside this learning, we encourage families to support children in using AI safely and positively at home. AI can be a helpful tool for learning and creativity when used carefully.

How families can help children use AI safely and well:

Talk regularly about what AI is and remind children that it doesn’t always give correct or fair answers.

  • Encourage children to use AI as a support tool, not a replacement for their own thinking or homework.
  • Remind children never to share personal information when using online tools.
  • Help children question what they see online and check information with a trusted adult.
  • Keep communication open so children feel confident asking for help if something doesn’t seem right.
  • By working together, we can help children become confident, thoughtful and safe users of AI and the internet.
